After 11 years of waiting for her son, Islam now raises him alone in Gaza while living with chronic illness

Islam Awni Al-Baz waited 11 long years for a child before her son, Waseem, was born. He is now six years old and is her whole world.

During the war, Islam’s husband abandoned her and Waseem, and he no longer acknowledges them. She now raises her son alone in a single rented room. Islam lives with severe hypothyroidism, along with iron and vitamin deficiencies, and needs ongoing medication just to keep going.

Winter is coming, and Islam and Waseem don’t have enough warm clothes or blankets to get through the cold nights. Every month, Islam needs £480 to cover her medication, rent, food and flour, Waseem’s school fees, and warm clothes and blankets for winter. Without support, she is forced to choose between her own treatment and her son’s basic needs.
